Char Dwellers
The river Bhrahmaputra’s brute force has been the source of personal as well as a cultural loss. The community that faces the most extreme conditions of the river are the char dwellers, as the very river that nourishes the fertile land of the region, unlashes its fury during the monsoon. Proving their adaptability for generations, they are the closest inhabitants along the river and have established themselves as skilled farmers by leveraging upon the fertile soil. The photographs are part of a long term documentary project titled ‘The Thin Line’, by Sumit Baruah, where he explored the lives of the closest inhabitants of the river Brahmaputra along with inspecting the political and cultural dynamics of the region.
